The Escapist's Guide to Life Elsewhere

Shelby Murchie

The Escapist’s Guide to Life Elsewhere is a trio of three-dimensional dreamscapes that are projected in high-definition onto frosted acrylic. Each one was designed to lull the refuge-seeking mind away from the complexities of everyday life. They exist in infinite configurations, far beyond past, present, and future. I am both fascinated and comforted by liminal spaces: the rest stops that reside between what was and what is next. I am also an advocate of escapism as a means of introspection. My dreamscapes serve as an exploration of how these two concepts intersect. This project is a visualization of the void that I so often find myself wandering off to when I need a temporary space to claim as my own. In the age of information overload, how do we find satisfaction in ambivalence? Perhaps, by acknowledging the darkness and uncertainty of transition through the escapist lens, we may uncover the ability to see with new light.
